12/10/2011 - Fat Guy and a Fork Report

Welcome to the first Fat Guy and a Fork Report. This report will consist of, you guessed it: a fat guy, eating food with a fork. I will be giving dining information, reviews dieting tips(yeah right), and more. I will try to fair in my words but also honest about the experience. I will try to have at least one report every week. sometimes more often, depends on where I eat that week. My first report will be on Sagano's Japanese Steak house. With a Japanese Steak House, it is kinda hard to go wrong. This past week my girlfriend and I on our 3rd year anniversary were on our way to an Italian restaurant when we were passing by Sagano's. It clicked, we should go there since our first date was at a Japanese Steak house. Only fitting right? It turned out to be an excellent call. If you have never been to a Japanese Steak house they don't have regular tables that you sit at in privacy. You are seated at basically a bar around a hot grill, with a bunch of people you don't know. This of course is part of the experience. We were a little late and the last people to come in so the others at our table were already eating their salads. The waitress was quick to get our drink orders, couple Mia Tias and we made a quick decision on our food so we wouldn't hold the rest of the table up. The salads come with a special house dressing. It has a distinct flavor, I did not dislike it I am just not sure I liked it either. As we finished the salad our chef made his appearance. Now this is the way food should be served everywhere. I get to see my food being cooked right in front of me. the Chef started out with pouring oil on the grill and then lighting it. Now that's a fire. he verified what we all had ordered and how we wanted it done. then he did a few tricks, throwing the spatulas around, catching things and even poured oil in a dish lit it on fire with his finger then flipped it up and caught it in his chef hat. I don't think I will try that one at home. he poured all the veggies on the grill in front of us and then sliced up an Onion, and pulled the rings off and made a small pyramid with them on the grill, then proceed to pour oil in the top, then lit it on fire. The flames shot up in the air you could feel the heat. After, all the fun he got down to business finishing cooking the veggies first, then serving them. He served each course as he cooked them. Fresh, hot and delicious vegetables. then on the the fried rice, made right before our eyes. then the main course. the steak was cooked to perfection. Tender and juicy, cut into bite size cubes. Around the table was steak, chicken, scallops, and shrimp. all the meals come with a "shrimp" appetizer, which we did not get as an appetizer, so I was pleasantly surprised when he served up 2 jumbo shrimp, grilled in front of us for the end. There were still several chunks of chicken left on the grill, I was wondering what they were for. then Chef Steve brought them over to him, and one by one picked them up with the spatula and flipped it for us to catch in our mouth. one by one he went around the table to each of us. I caught mine on the second try. A couple people caught theirs on the first try. Now it was to finish our meal. I looked around the table, and I was the only one with a clean plate. I guess I was just trying to keep up with the chef. However, I should have taken offense to the fact that at each round he served from one side of the table to the other, and then with anything left not served, he gave to me. But I was too happy that he gave me a little extra to worry about being stereotyped as the fat guy. A 5 star meal served with fun and flair. And if it were not for the 2 Mia Tia's that we consumed each the we would have come in under $50 for 2. Not bad when everyone had boxes to go but me. I would highly recommend Sagano's not only for the food, but the atmosphere and the entertainment. With the show and fresh food cooked right in front of you you'll want to budget at least and hour and a half if not 2. Dinners start out at about $15 dollars but come with high quality ingredients and excellent portion size, and lots of courses, soup, salad, veggies, rice and meat.
